Starting Monday, Aug. 4, metered parking will go into effect in the lot behind 72 East Main Street in Babylon.
It will cost 25 cents an hour to park there, and metered parking will be enforced seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., including holidays.
Some people visiting downtown Babylon say the increased metered parking may discourage some from eating and shopping in the village.
"They should want your business. It's kind of hard if you can't find a spot on the street,” said Sammi Poggi, of Bay Shore.
Babylon Village's Facebook post says you can pay at the machine with quarters or a debit card or credit card, or you can download the Passport Parking app, or visit ppprk.com.
The Babylon Chamber of Commerce says it fully supports the new meter fees, and the money collected from them will go to maintenance and equipment in the village.
As News 12 has reported, Babylon extended the cutoff for paying to park to 10 p.m. in April 2025.
In 2022, the village doubled the cost for two-hour parking from 25 cents to 50 cents.
